Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned plans by the aggressor state of Russia to hold presidential elections on occupied Ukrainian territory. On December 9th, a statement was released on the MFA’s website expressing the government’s dismay and outrage at the idea of allowing a foreign power to have a say in Ukraine’s internal affairs.
The statement condemned the Kremlin’s «flagrant disregard for international law» and urged Russia to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It further stressed that allowing the Russian state to meddle in Ukraine’s affairs would be in direct violation of the Helsinki Final Act of 1975, which enshrines the inviolability of borders.
The ministry also called on the international community to take a strong stand against Russia’s expansionist policies and to support Ukraine’s efforts to defend its homeland. It noted that Ukraine has the right to self-determination and to decide its own future, free from outside interference.
The statement concluded by reiterating Ukraine’s commitment to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in the Donbas region and urged Russia to respect the Minsk Agreements, which are aimed at restoring peace and stability to the region.
In the face of Russian aggression, the Ukrainian government is determined to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The MFA’s statement is a clear indication of this commitment and a reminder to the international community that Ukraine deserves its full support in this endeavor.
